The moment I entered the conference room that day, I saw that it was more like painting studio! Lots of easel s arranged in the middle of the conference room along with the set of colors, palette, and sketch pens. White canvas mounted on every easel. Am I at the wrong event? But volunteers greeted with a smile. “You are at right venue Mam!”

It was a fun activity where parents were given canvas along with their kids too. But the rule was that parent will not see what their kids are drawing and kids were not allowed to interact with their parents while doing painting. Both were given a subject, it was almost same with different angle. Kids had to draw what they want to be! …children’s aspirations! And parents were asked to draw as neatly, what is their plan for child’s future! What career they want their apple of eye should opt… After the paintings were done, parents painting were rarely matching with their kids. Does it mean we cannot read the mind of our kids?

These fantastic memories are of activity “Do Your Homework”. I was confused when I was asked to bring kid along with me for the event. What kid has to do with finance? Now the fun activity made us realize what does it means. Most of the time, what we think good for our kids is not what he/she thinks of …. Let me make it easier.…. Children of this era have very strong point of view regarding what they want to do in life. Those days are gone when parents would decide which career their kids would opt? Nowadays kids don’t just follow their parent’s footsteps.

This activity made us realized that whatever our kids choose to be, we need to be prepared. Our support should be emotional as well as financial too. On this note we also have to consider the rising educational cost. It is also true that nowadays children have innumerable career choices and some of the children’s aspirations could be more expensive in future. Thus, as a parent “kids-education” is becoming our long term goal along with our various life goals.

Axis Mutual Fund team have done lot of research on how parents plan for child’s future and the key findings shows that many parents are not having exact view about how much education would cost them in near future. While some parents still wants their kids to choose conventional career choices to have safe future. Their research says that few parents are willing to send their kids to abroad but miss to plan for it. So being a parent we actually need to do our homework ( #DoYourHomework ) so as to support our kids in chasing their dreams. This amazing activity with kids taught us a great lesson for children’s aspirations and how to plan for child’s future!
